the Alferini family

The station restaurant

For the Alferini family cooking is an experience, a journey into the gastronomic world. Subtle nostalgic flavours with hidden surprises.
Trains and their history meet the world of catering, with a leitmotiv that spans over sixty years. Inspired by the figure of his grandfather, who took part in the design of the first Milanese subway and after whom he was named, and the times in which he lived, Giovanni Alferini Bertugno creations revolve around the family history. He recalls the nostalgic imagery of the old trattorias, particularly those that were located right by the railway stations. To do this, he could not have found a better place than the Market, where, under the shadow of the great Cappa Mazzoniana in Via Giolitti, the railway workers’ canteen once resided. Termini station is not only a place where people hop on and off trains, it is also a place full of stories. At the Locanda di Stazione, passengers’ stories are folded into the strictly Italian and classic cuisine. Here the food is cooked using techniques that combine the present with the past, and the seasonal menu never ceases to amaze us.

Added to this is the “bar della locanda” where Giovanni and Carlo Piccerillo bring back the traditional Italian cocktail mixing, but at the same time by blending it with the most advanced and modern techniques of international bartending. The recipes that have marked the history of good Italian drinking are carefully prepared with a range of exclusively Italian products. Here bitters and vermouths feature in a big way. They are inspired by the Italian custom of drinking after going to the theatre and revolve around the idea of travel. In fact, the ingredients of each drink on offer take us on a journey. From Palermo-Messina, with ingredients such as sweet Marsala wine and prickly pear and Milan-Turin, with hazelnut oil and rhubarb, to Rome-Naples, with smoked white brandy and citrus and spicy notes.
